301 Carver Street, Kingport, TN
The Bridge Builders of Kingsport, in partnership with the Heritage Alliance, will present Nancy, an original, award-winning historical play, on Thursday, February 26, at 6:30 p.m. at Central Baptist Church, 301 Carver Street in Kingsport. A panel discussion will follow the performance.
The play tells the largely untold story of Nancy, an enslaved woman owned by abolitionist Elihu Embree, founder of The Emancipator, the nation’s first newspaper dedicated to ending slavery. While Embree’s life is well documented, the production focuses on Nancy’s perspective, exploring her thoughts, emotions, and uncertain fate during a pivotal year between 1820 and 1821. The story is based on historical records from the Washington County Archives.
Nancy is portrayed by Taleah D. Rogers, a Johnson City native, longtime educator, and community leader.
Written by Anne G’Fellers-Mason, the play has received statewide recognition for excellence in history and museum storytelling. Admission is free, though donations from the event will support history education and preservation through the Heritage Alliance of Kingsport and Jonesborough.
